SNOW AND ICE
by Alexandra York

Blue and white in pale moonlight
Sleeping, wrapped in dreams
All is silent through the night—
Snow and ice, snow and ice
Chilled and tight and gleaming.

Dawn will break upon the lake
Creeping toward the day
Leaving morning in its wake—
Snow and ice, snow and ice
Stilled by night, now waiting

For the Sun

Snow-laden iceflows imprisoned before
Swim freely like giant swans
upon the pond;
Misty rainbows, like painters, pour
their palettes of many hues
into the blue and white
of winter's night

Make way, make way
For Day

Brilliant and bright, a child's delight
Of snowmen and skates and sleighs
Laughter rises like birds in flight— Snow and ice, snow and ice
Thrilled by light

Delaying. . . Night
and cold moonlight—
Snow and ice, snow and ice

Day and night, dark and light
Winter rites all invite

Snow and ice
Snow and ice
Snow—
