Alice Ann: The Visually Incorrect Reindeer
By Roger Donway

Well, you've heard about Dasher and Dancer,
Donder, Blitzen, and all of those.
You've heard about Rudolph the Reindeer,
And the use that was made of his nose.

But I bet you've never heard of Alice Ann,
And the secret that she kept hid:
How she could not see ultraviolet light,
Though all the other reindeer did.

Oh, for many, many years she had wanted
To go to her family and say:
"I can't see the world the way you see the world.
I have to see the world my way."

Then it happened one terrible Christmas:
The Sun sent a burst of UV,
And all of the reindeers' eyes were dazzled,
And for days they could not see.

So, Santa called up all the world's leaders
And told them through his tears:
"It looks like I have to cancel Christmas,
For the first time in two thousand years."

Well! Alice Ann knew then she had to speak up:
"I can guide your sleigh," she said.
'Cause I never could see ultraviolet light—
But I can see infrared."

"I see the hearth where a Yule log's burning,
And the warmth of a parent's love.
I see joy flare in a child's heart
When we land on the roof above."

"So, you don't have to cancel Christmas,
And it's not because of me.
It's because there's no problem we cannot solve
When we see things differently."

"No you don't have to cancel Christmas,
Not now and maybe never.
As long as we can see things differently
We can — have — Christ — mas — for — ever!"
