This speech was originally given on November 3, 1997, at Hillsdale College for
a conference on "Art and the Moral Imagination (where I also curated a
major art exhibit for the event), and it has been given in person or published
in five other venues. This re-printing is the sixth, and I am sad to say that
my theme is even more important today than when it was first given because
the public education system has plummeted even further in the 10 intervening
years. Here is the new link to the speech on ARC: https://www.artrenewal.org/Article/Title/The-Fourth-R-in-Education
ART RENEWAL CENTER (ARC)
internationally leads the revival of realism in the visual arts. The
organization is a 501(C)(3), non-profit, educational foundation, that offers
thousands of images of art on its site, www.artrenewal.org and
promotes living artists who paint in the realist tradition, offers yearly
scholarships to art students at ARC approved atelier based art schools,
articles on art and culture and hosts the now famous International ARC Salon
Competition™, which this year had 3,750 entries from 69 countries. Art lovers
will find much pleasure on their site, which is vast in scope and comprehensive
in theme. Please note that the photo accompanying this post has nothing to
do with my speech; it is on the Home page and relates to an ARC competition.
Photos of art chosen by me to accompany my speech are embedded within the
speech itself. Feel free to pass on to those who might find interest
in art education.
